What not to do after a car accident.
- Do not leave the scene
It is important you stay at the scene and wait for the relevant authorities for redress. If there is a threat around you, ensure you drive to the nearest police station or the nearest safest place and report the matter to the police immediately.
- Do not underestimate your bodily injuries
Do not ignore any symptoms like nausea, headache or pain even if you are not visibly hurt. Please consult a doctor to rule out internal injuries even if you feel fine.
- Do not fail to call the police and collect a police abstract
Some people mistakenly believe that it is okay to not call police if nobody is hurt after the accident. This is not true. You should call the police regardless of how minor the accident is. A police report abstract is a mandatory document for any motor claim. With the exception of windscreen claims.
- Neglecting to report the accident to your insurance company
Even if you do not plan to make a claim, make sure you report the accident to your car insurer within a reasonable timeframe. Failing to report the accident in a timely manner may give your insurance company the legal grounds to deny your claim, depending on coverage details listed in your policy.
- Leaving the scene without documenting the accident
Do not leave the scene without getting your facts right about what happened during the accident. If in a position to, please take photos of the scene of the accident, get the other driver’s details e.g driving license and insurance details in case of a collision, and any other details that may be relevant.
- Do not ‘visually’ assess the damage and exchange money on the spot with the other driver without a professional consultation. Your vehicle may need more repairs than what you get paid for on the spot, leaving you to go back to your pocket.
